It isn’t opening day, but it is the next best thing… first spring training game! While I enjoy watching basketball, football and hockey, it just isn’t the same as baseball. The end of October leaves me counting down until this very day. My beloved Rockies have their first game today down in Arizona. Here’s hoping this is the beginning of a much better than 2008 season!
Baseball is a way of life in my house. In fact, if it weren’t for baseball we’d probably be living in a cardboard box since it is responsible for Mitch’s paycheck. Last year I joined my two loves and had the opportunity to shoot baseball. While it was a good experience, I think the two are better left separated. Because of the crazy and demanding schedule I missed out on most of wedding season and only got in a select few sessions.
Locally, we’re gearing up for the start of the TinCaps season here in Fort Wayne. Opening day isn’t until April 16th, but the longer hours are starting for Mitch, and I’m hearing more about fertilizer programs, equipment, grass, and dirt. Single game tickets went on sale yesterday and it sounds like it is going to be a packed house that first night. I can’t wait!
The best part of all of this… spring is right around the corner! I’ve been eyeing a new bike, and thinking that I can’t wait until it is nice enough for me to ride down to the ballpark.

We were with a short season team last year, so this opening day wasn’t until the middle of May. The crazy part was that it was COLD that night!

Mitch doing what he does best, playing in the dirt and grass working on the field.

My parents flew in for a weekend and I had a day off. What did we do? Well, we watched baseball of course. By the way, you have no idea how hard it was to get someone to take this picture… can’t say Cubs fans are the friendliest around.
Welcome back baseball!

Apparently all it takes to make the front page is a 12×5 sinkhole that is about 4 feet deep in your field.

This image is from the NWI Times.
Here is Mitch’s second claim to fame in NWI.
There are a couple of articles you can read, this one is talking about everything in the area and this one is talking about all of the flooding at the field.
Our games today have now been officially canceled. It does finally look promising that we’ll be able to start them tomorrow!
Stay dry!

I was mostly joking yesterday when I said I should head to Cabela’s. However with roads closing around us and the rivers still rising, it is getting a little worrisome.
According to weather.com the chance of precipitation through 1:00 is 100% and at 2:00 it drops to 80%. As of now they have it dropping down to 30% and staying there from 3:00 on.
No pictures today, mainly because they all look the same as yesterday. That, and it is raining like crazy right now, so there is no chance that I’m taking my camera outside!
Hopefully we’ll know the fate of our games in the next hour or so.

I never realized how much this part of the country felt tropical storms and hurricanes. However, these last few that have rolled in have brought their fair share of rain our way (usually a 4-5 days later). Yesterday we had steady rain all day, so much that we were forced to call game three (the first game in Gary) of the Northern League Championship Series.
Well, Mitch and I ended up getting home around 9:30 last night. It was still steadily raining, but nothing heavy, as it had been all day. Around 1 a.m. I was woke up by the rain and thunder. It was no longer a nice little steady rain, but instead a complete downpour. Our parking lot was completely flooded, so about then we knew that the odds of us getting a game in today were slim. Until about 7 a.m. the heavy rain continued.
We didn’t have to be down at the field until noon so the overcast day at least made for some good sleeping weather. That is until Mitch’s phone starting ringing around 10 and we were told that the field was a lake. We hurried down there as quick as we could only to pull up to his shop and see this image.

It was at this point that I knew we were in trouble. It was also at that time that I saw the rain gauge showed 5 inches of rain (the gauge was emptied before we left last night).

Here is a shot of the field about three weeks ago.

And, here is what it currently looks like. Luckily it didn’t flood so badly that it got under the tarps, so the infield is still dry. However, the outfield, warning track, and dugouts are completely saturated and flooded.

As you can see the dugouts are flooded up to field level. This wood box that is floating is usually under the helmet shelf for the guys to store their bats in.

I can’t imagine what was going through Mitch’s head at this point. By the way, this is the beginning of the steps into the dugout.

Perhaps the best (loaded with sarcasm) news is that it started raining again. We’re supposed to have off and on rain all day, and then from this evening through tomorrow are supposed to get an aditional 4-5 inches. As of right now the game is rescheduled for tomorrow, but I will be very surprised if that is at all possible.
Maybe I should run off to Cabela’s and get us a little raft. Who knows, by tomorrow we may need it.

Where did my life summer go? Seeing as how it’s been a long while since I last posted, you can probably guess that I underestimated the time that I would spend at the ballpark. Although I haven’t had much, or really anytime this summer, I have kept shooting. The nice thing has been that besides the daily baseball shoots, I have been making an effort to shoot more for myself. I’ll slowly share some of those images now that I am getting closer to having my life back.
However, this should not come as a shock that the only images I have handy right now are baseball shots. Here is one that I got when Mitch, my friend Maribeth, and I drove up to Canada for the Northern League All Star Game. It worked out that the guys were playing in Fargo the day before, so we stopped there first.

I know that this isn’t as good as a cute baby, but this is the only proof I can post up from my day that is photo related to prove that I really am swamped. The rest of the proof will be on the outfield wall for anyone who comes to a RailCats game. This picture is going to be used on our official scorecard.
I almost forgot about this… Cydni is going to be selling limited edition posters of pictures I take throughout the season or designs I do in the store. The first one actually isn’t anything too fancy it is basically just all of our logos, but for RailCats fans it is definitely something that would be neat to frame up on the wall.

With the RailCats getting ready to start their season, Mitch has spent some of his time on the phone with reporters lately. He just kind of assumed that they might use a quote or two from him in articles, but Friday they ran what was almost a full page story on him in the Post Tribune complete with a big beautiful picture. I can’t access the picture online, but here is a link to the story http://www.post-trib.com/sports/highschools/901911,tobaseball.article . We’re about to get kicked out of the library, but I’ll get the picture posted up tomorrow. I’m so proud of him!

I didn’t notice when I logged on this weekend, but I hit the 500 views mark! Don’t be shy, leave me a comment if you’re viewing, I’d love to know who is all out there!
This pic obviously isn’t mine since we haven’t started our season yet. It is however the stadium here and my digital handiwork. Today was a little big of a crazy day at the ballpark, so it’s only fitting that it makes it’s way here.

It doesn’t seem like I’ve been shooting much for myself lately. While at UNC I took hundreds and hundreds of art prints. In fact, our walls at home are covered with them. This one is from last summer of Mitch’s field when he was with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. I added a little Photoshop mojo to it as well. I can do custom art pics, or might even already have one on file. I love seeing an empty wall and getting to decide what will go there, not just picking it off of a website or catalog. So, if anyone out there wants to pick what will go on their walls, give me a call, I can help.
